Otherness [exhibition]

From 12 June 2024, with the opening of the summer exhibition Otherness, Kortil Gallery will be presenting over thirty works of art from the National Museum of Modern Art (NMMU).

Through the selection of works by our leading artists, the exhibition delves into the concept of otherness, offering fresh perspectives and potential interpretations of artworks created from the latter half of the 19th century onward. The concept of the NMMU curator Marta Radman focuses on exploration and interpretation of social contexts, artists’ self-censorship, and the significance of gender and gender identity in creative expression. These themes are addressed through the lense of feminism, decolonization, and gender and LGBTQI+ theory.

Among others, the exhibition features the works of Miroslav Kraljević, Vlaho Bukovac, Milivoj Uzelac, Vera Fisher, Josip Račić, Vlasta Delimar, Nasta Rojc and Ksenija Kantoci, created in the media of painting, sculpture, photography, video and art installations. On this occasion, attempts will be made to challenge the dominant discourse and offer space to art and artists who have historically been marginalized, and to encourage a more inclusive dialogue about the complexity of identity, (re)presentation and power dynamics in the art world.

Through this exhibition, which runs until September 14, Kortil Gallery presents its summer exhibition program to the domestic and foreign audience. The program is realized in collaboration with the National Museum of Modern Art, which is closed until 2026 due to the renovation of the Vranyczany-Dobrinović Palace.
